How to choose a good paint booth?

Choosing a paint booth is a very important decision, as it is an investment for decades. With a good booth, you can work efficiently for over 20 years, but a poor or poorly installed paint booth means years of headaches. Therefore, when considering the purchase of a paint booth, also think about how to install and configure the booth properly and take into account the ongoing maintenance costs. This way, you can be sure that the paint booth will immediately raise the level of your paint shop.

A paint booth essentially serves three purposes: protecting the environment, protecting the health of employees, and ensuring a flawless end result. Chemicals and paint particles are dangerous to both nature and people, and a well-ventilated paint booth protects both. In addition, a good booth ensures the dust-free environment possible, which means that the painting result is of higher quality, more durable, and more beautiful. Proper lighting and fast drying thanks to the right temperature and humidity also help achieve the best results.

When choosing a paint booth, pay attention to:

  • Ventilation – ensuring good and even air exchange and a dust-free painting environment are the most important tasks of a paint booth, so pay close attention to the type of ventilation used by the paint booth. Both the air exchange volume (for example, the SPANESI Giotto paint booth offers two options: 24,000 m³/h and 32,000 m³/h) and the direction of extraction are important. In general, a booth with top-to-bottom airflow is used for painting vehicles, as this prevents paint dust and other airborne particles from settling on the fresh surface, and the painter does not have to worry about the direction of airflow when working in the booth. However, it may not be possible to direct the air to the floor in every workshop. In such cases, side extraction is used. Side extraction is also used in situations where very heavy parts are being painted and therefore bottom extraction and the construction of grates is not possible or practical.
  • Burner energy efficiency – a paint booth requires precise temperature and humidity control, and the wrong burner can make the paint booth expensive to maintain. It is worth choosing an efficient gas burner with a direct combustion chamber. For example, the burner in the SPANES Michelangelo paint chamber allows you to save up to 40% on heating costs compared to a conventional heat accumulator and burner.
  • Lighting - lighting is extremely important when painting, in order to ensure a flawless end result. The paint booth must have a light level of at least 1000 lux, but we recommend 1400-2000 lux. Good lighting mimics daylight so that there are no surprises later.
  • Paint booth dimensions – the dimensions of the paint booth must be selected according to the dimensions of the vehicles or parts to be painted. In addition, the amount of space required for the painter to move around must be taken into account. Depending on the manufacturer, the length and width of the paint booth can be adjusted in 50 cm increments. If you have a lot of work, it is worth considering adding a separate drying chamber, which will significantly increase productivity. However, if your workshop is smaller and you offer smaller paint repair services, it is worth looking at portable paint booths (for example, Pivab Dent Portal).
  • Cleaning and maintenance – only by properly and correctly maintaining and cleaning your paint booth can you be sure that it will last for decades and guarantee high-quality paint results. Therefore, find out how to replace the filters, how much they cost, and whether they are easily available. You can also leave the maintenance of the chamber to professionals, who will inspect the chamber and perform the necessary maintenance quickly and correctly, leaving the workshop free to focus on its core tasks.

New or used paint booth

A paint booth is a considerable financial investment, so the question may arise as to whether it would be worth buying a used paint booth to optimize costs. The short answer is no – don't risk buying an old booth for such an important piece of equipment. The only situation where it is worth considering is if you know the seller and their workshop very well, you have complete trust in the seller, and the booth on offer has a verifiable, correct maintenance history. In this case, there is even an advantage to buying a used paint booth – you can try it out and you have someone who has probably seen all the problems and can help with maintenance. But even then, dismantling, transporting, setting up, and configuring the paint booth on site are tasks that the previous owner may not have the knowledge to perform. In this case, a used paint booth that worked perfectly in the previous workshop may malfunction in its new location if it is not configured correctly after installation.

It is better to turn to professionals. The Pintavärv team has sold, installed, and configured over 40 paint booths in Estonia. This means that we have seen paint shops of various sizes and specializations, including industrial and automotive paint booths, and we are familiar with the inner workings of the SPANESI paint booths and Termomeccanica paint booths we offer. We can determine your exact needs before placing an order, and we are responsible for transport and installation. Once the booth is in place, we also provide training on setup and maintenance. And of course, don't forget that new also means more modern solutions – automation, efficient burners, customization options, etc. Modern paint booths offer all of these possibilities.
